First of: I don't know that router nor am I using it.
Since most external hard drives are formatted for PCs, before the backup of your Mac begins you need to format the hard drive for macOS. Connect the hard drive to your Mac. Open Applications Utilities Disk Utility; Find your external hard drive in the list of drives. Click 'Erase' from the Disk Utility options. Confirm the action.

- Apple includes its own backup app on every Mac. Called Time Machine, it's the easiest way to back up your Mac to an external hard drive.
- To see storage information about your Mac, click the Apple menu in the top-left of your screen. Choose About This Mac and click the Storage tab. For Time Machine backups, it's good to use a drive that has at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac.
Wireless Backup For Mac
From the PlayMax manual http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=515400 you should have (installed) an application named 'Memory Safe' which should take care of backups.
But it seems that the PlayMax router is limited to USB-connected harddrives that use Windows file systems on them (like FAT32 or NTFS).
Since you mentioned that you use your backup harddisk before directly connected to your Mac I assume that it use the MacOS Extended (Journaled) file system, which the router cannot handle (page 30 of the PlayMax manual).
Picopix 2330 drivers for mac. You can reformat your backup harddisk so that it matches the requirements of the router, but that would delete everything that is on it right now.

Unfortunately, no other manufacturer offers a product like the Time Capsule, which is a WiFi router with a built in hard drive.
External Wifi Hard Drive
If you don't mind having two separate devices, there are a limited number of WiFi routers that support Time Machine backups with an attached USB hard drive. Office no mac. Among these are the upper Asus routers and the Synology router.
If you already have another WiFi router, you might want to take a look at the Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices from Synology which will support Time Machine backups. In this type of setup, the Synology NAS attaches to your WiFi router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection, which will allow you to back up over the WiFi router's wireless network.
